On June 5, 2017, Stage 2 of the Critérium du Dauphiné took riders 171 km (106 miles) from Saint-Chamond to Arlanc. A couple of hours after the finish, I chatted with Brent to find out what he eats and drinks for recovery from a long stage. Here’s what he had to say:
Omelette & Rice Bowl
Today I burned about 3,700 calories beginning with the neutral zone through the end of the stage. After a stage like this, I immediately drink some diluted fruit juice and a natural soda for some fluid and sugar. Then I eat some fruit and more solid food like a rice bowl.
After this particular stage, Brent was eating a omelette & rice bowl with a little chicken, some parmesan cheese and salt. This is a good mix of proteins, carbs and flavor…more tasty than recovery powder any day (in my opinion).
Brent asked how things went at the WNC FlyerMotion Makers Rest Stop and I mentioned the iced coffee and brownies that we served. We both agreed that we need something tasty and inventive at the Bookwalter Binge rest stops. Last year, Rest Stop 3 added boiled and salted potatoes, which were a big hit.
We’re looking for more creative ideas for whole, healthy and tasty foods to serve. Got a suggestion? Email me at Jen@VeloGirlRides.com and let me hear your ideas.
